Government Proclaims Accessability Week

The Government of Saskatchewan is joining many provinces across the country in proclaiming next week, May 26 to June 1, as National AccessAbility Week in Saskatchewan.

National AccessAbility Week in Saskatchewan is a time to promote inclusion and accessibility in communities and workplaces.  It is also a time to recognize the efforts of individuals, communities and workplaces that are actively removing barriers to give Canadians of all abilities an equal chance to participate in their communities.

“Our government is pleased to proclaim National AccessAbility Week in Saskatchewan and celebrate the work being done across the province to create inclusive and accessible communities,” Social Services Minister Paul Merriman said.

Since 1964, Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Saskatchewan has provided leadership in the development and delivery of programs, services, and resources to Saskatchewan people living with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities.

“SCI Saskatchewan is pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with many organizations who support people living with a disability, and with the public sectors in Saskatchewan, to highlight the purpose and anticipated results of National AccessAbility Week,” SCI Saskatchewan Executive Director Launel J. Scott said.  “Although enhancements toward accessibility and inclusion are happening, we still need to encourage change in the way we think, talk and act toward true participation and accessibility.  Society benefits when all citizens have the opportunity to share their skills and creativity, and reach their full potential in their communities and workplaces.”

This proclamation supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy by helping to create awareness and understanding of the rights of people with disabilities.  Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work which aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability.
