Interprovincial police collaboration leads to arrests

A joint response between Onion Lake RCMP detachment, the Saskatchewan Crime Reduction Team (CRT), Eastern Alberta District Rural Crime Reduction Unit (EADRCRU), Lloydminster and Cold Lake Police Dog Services, and Alberta RCMP Air Services proved effective in bringing a dangerous incident to a conclusion.

On March 27, 2019 the Eastern Alberta District Rural Crime Reduction Unit had planned an operation to locate and stop individuals that had been fleeing police in stolen vehicles in the Fishing Lake, Alberta area. When encountered, a vehicle fled the area at a high rate of speed. A spike belt was deployed in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle, resulting in two deflated tires. RCMP Air Services maintained aerial surveillance on the fleeing vehicle, which despite losing its back tires, continued to flee and evade police.

Onion Lake RCMP detachment members along with the Saskatchewan Crime Reduction Team were advised by Alberta RCMP of the stolen vehicle fleeing from police. It soon became evident that the fleeing vehicle was heading to the Saskatchewan border on Highway 641. Onion Lake RCMP and Saskatchewan Crime Reduction Team members responded to assist. As soon as RCMP members encountered the vehicle as it crossed into Saskatchewan, an occupant of the vehicle started pointing at police what was believed to be a firearm.

The vehicle was immobilized by EADRCRU. Onion Lake detachment, both Crime Reduction Units, and Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services immediately contained the scene and were able to arrest all six occupants from the vehicle without further incident.
