With the Canada Day long weekend approaching, the Government of Saskatchewan is reminding drivers to be aware of highway construction and work zones.

“Whether you’re planning a road trip to the lake or driving to visit friends, it’s a good idea to plan ahead by checking in with the highway hotline,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Lori Carr said. “Our crews will be out working all weekend, so please drive carefully for your safety and theirs.”

Drivers are reminded to be alert when approaching construction zones, and comply with the posted signage and speed limits.

“We have recently had some close calls with drivers in the construction zones and were fortunate no one was seriously hurt,” HJR Asphalt CEO Josh Safronetz said. “Our workers are vulnerable in these areas and we can’t stress enough how critical it is for drivers to slow down and pay attention to the posted signs and speed limits.”

There are some occasions when construction zones have temporary speed reductions left in place even when workers are not present, and during night time hours. A sharp pavement drop-off, lane closure or loose gravel are examples of hazards that would warrant a slower posted speed.

Highway 1 surfacing near McLean;
Highway 2 passing lanes north of Moose Jaw;
Highway 4 bridge work near Saskatchewan Landing;
Highway 4 bridge work near the Battlefords;
Highway 10 surfacing near Balcarres;
Highway 16 bridge work near Borden;
Highway 167 surfacing near Weyakwin; and
Highway 255 surfacing near Tobin Lake.
