The opening day of the Canadian Ringette Championships has drawn to a close. Wins, losses, fierce battles, new friendships, and some very exciting ringette.
Nine hundred athletes, 250 bench staff and 48 teams have descended on Regina for a full week of exciting ringette action. Have you seen ringette before? It’s called the fastest game on ice for a reason. These teams are fierce. The competition so far has been rapid and incredibly exciting.
In the National Ringette League division, there were some incredible matches. Both the Atlantic Attack and the Edmonton WAM! ended the day with 2 wins each to give them both 6 points and the lead in the NRL division. Sheri Adams, from the Cambridge Turbos, leads the points race with 9, 4 goals and 5 assists.
After round one play in the U16 category, U16 AB1-Team Alberta, leads the way with a massive 22 goals to lead pool A. U16 NB1-Team New Brunswick, leads pool B and U16 AB3-Calgary CORE. Jenna Martin from U16 ON1-Team Ontario tops the leader board with 4.5 points. Callie, Bizuk, from U16 AB1-Team Alberta finishes day 1 as the top shot-stopper with a save percentage of 1.0.
In the U19 division, the 3 pools are topped by Equipe Quebec, Team New Brunswick and Waterloo. Team Alberta player Regan Meier scored a massive 10 points, with 2 goals and 8 assists to put her at the front of the leader board for the U19s. While goaltender Raegan Hatch from the U19 AB3- Fusion finishes day 1 as the top shot-stopper with a save percentage of 1.0.
As part of Canadian Ringette Championships, earlier this week, the National Ringette League (NRL) announced the nominees for its annual awards program. The awards program recognizes the performance of NRL athletes during regular season play with trophies for Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, Top Forward, Top Centre, Top Defense, and Top Goalkeeper. These awards, along with awards for Coaching Staff of the Year, NRL Top Scorer and NRL Scoring Champion will be announced on April 15, 2023.
