Saskatchewan NDP MLA for Saskatoon Churchill-Wildwood Keith Jorgenson introduced a private member’s bill today that would formally recognize September as Ukrainian Heritage Month in Saskatchewan.
The bill aims to acknowledge the many contributions of Ukrainian Canadians to the province’s history, economy, and culture. September was chosen because it marks the arrival of the first documented Ukrainian immigrants to Canada in 1891.
“Ukrainian Canadians helped build this province,” Jorgenson said. “They’ve enriched our communities through their contributions to agriculture, business, politics, and communities.
“This bill is about honouring that legacy and recognizing the deep roots of Ukrainian heritage in Saskatchewan.”
Saskatchewan is home to more than 160,000 people of Ukrainian descent — one of the highest proportions in Canada.
“People of Ukraine have shaped this province in every way — serving as veterans, educators, farmers, artists, and even as Premier,” said Brittney Senger, Saskatchewan NDP MLA for Saskatoon Southeast. “I am so proud to honour this community and celebrate all they have done and will continue to do for this province.
“Many Ukrainians have looked to Saskatchewan as a place of safety and opportunity during times of war, oppression, and displacement,” said Erika Ritchie, Saskatchewan NDP MLA for Saskatoon Nutana. “Recognizing Ukrainian Heritage Month is part of how we stand with Ukraine and celebrate the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian community.”
