Wakaw RCMP are reminding the public to lock residences and take precautions to prevent vehicle thefts following a series of break and enters in the area. RCMP officers responded to reports in the communities of St. Louis and Hoey involving a suspect entering local properties on foot, and accessing or attempting to access, unlocked vehicles and a residence. These incidents are still under investigation.
To prevent being a victim of property theft, officers advise the public to follow these tips:
- Keep your home locked.
- Keep your property well-lit. Install motion-sensor security lights or timer lights to discourage trespassers.
- Consider installing a monitored security or alarm system.
To prevent vehicle thefts, Saskatchewan RCMP advise owners to:
- Lock your car and keep keys inside your home.
- Avoid leaving valuables in vehicles – even spare change can make it a possible target.
- Always remember to remove your garage door opener from your vehicle – if it is stolen, it can mean someone has access to everything inside your garage and your home if they are attached.
- Avoid idling an unoccupied vehicle.
- Install an anti-theft system if your vehicle does not have one, or use a steering wheel lock to deter thieves.
