Members of the Legislative Assembly gathered this morning with dignitaries, Canadian Armed Forces personnel, veterans, and public servants for the annual Service of Remembrance for the Public Service. The ceremony honoured those who served and those who gave their lives in times of war. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, during which more than one million Canadians served and 45,000 were killed.
“We gather today to honour the courage and sacrifice of Canadian service members – those who served, those who continue to serve, and those who gave their lives defending our freedoms,” Premier Scott Moe said. “This ceremony reflects our commitment to remember their service and the freedoms it secured.”
The service was held in the rotunda of the Legislative Building. Afterward, Premier Moe laid a wreath at the Saskatchewan War Memorial, located west of the building on Memorial Way. The memorial bears the names of Saskatchewan service members who died in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, the Afghanistan conflict, and during peacetime and peacekeeping missions around the world.
The Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial, managed by the Saskatchewan War Memorial Committee, is a website to commemorate Saskatchewan citizens who lost their lives in war. The site features more than 11,000 war casualties and their stories. The site complements the physical war memorial. Find out more about the Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial by visiting www.svwm.ca.
